The Golden Globes and ShortCuts Episode 2

Well, I planned on having a lot to say tonight after the Golden Globes ceremony. Last year, Ricky Gervais mowed his way through a crowd of the biggest names in Hollywood and I couldn’t stop laughing. This year, he was funny, but he wasn’t nearly as biting. Did he self-censor to prove a point about the expectations of the media? Did he actually bend to the will of the Hollywood Foreign Press or NBC? Eh, I don’t care either way. Gervais knocked it out of the park last year, and I guess I will have to go back and watch those YouTube clips and reminisce. He had some good barbs this year, but maybe I was just hoping for more. In the end, the show was just incredibly boring, which had nothing to do with Ricky– the man did what he could. The winners were almost all middle-of-the-road, non-controversial choices. These kinds of shows love to get Clooney up on stage whenever they can, so of course he won for The Descendants (a tremendous film, but his performance was not on the level of Michael Fassbender’s in Shame). Clooney is the obvious, safe, likable choice, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. The whole affair was just so agonizingly blasé that I can’t even bring myself to properly trash it right now. Or maybe it’s just because it’s two in the morning…

At any rate, there is one bit of excitement to pick off the vine: Episode 2 of ShortCuts the podcast will be dropping at noon PST today! Our guest is friend and fellow movie fan Luke Allein. You can check out his YouTube page here and some of his links can be found on the Friends page of the ShortCuts website. He’s a funny guy and it should be a fun listen, though it’s not for the faint of heart (hint: earmuff your kids).

Thanks, all. I’m off to sleep as I’ve spent the night fighting post-Globes sedation.
