The Trailer for P.T. Anderson’s Latest Film, ‘The Master’, is Amazing!

This is stating the obvious, but Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the greatest directors working today. Although he has only made five features so far, each one has been distinct and fascinating. I struggle with coming up with a favorite of his films. Magnolia (named after a street not far from me) is a triumph in so many ways, with its blend of humor and tragedy and coincidence… or are there coincidences? With There Will Be Blood, Anderson took a departure from the multi-storyline format of some of his previous films and focused the narrative on Daniel Day-Lewis’ superb portrayal of Daniel Plainview, resulting in one of the most impressive character studies ever. However, his most watchable movie for me is probably still his second feature, Boogie Nights— a hilarious/poignant/tragic look at a young porn star named Dirk Diggler, who reaches heights he only imagined in the ’70s but then it all crumbles for him in the ’80s (which is similar to Henry Hill’s fall from the top in Scorsese’s GoodFellas).

He may not be prolific, but Paul Thomas Anderson (or PTA) continues to make one remarkable film after another, even if they are several years apart. There Will Be Blood was released in 2007 (it lost a tight Oscar race against No Country for Old Men), and now, five years later, The Master will hit the U.S. in October. A trailer (seen above) was released via producer Megan Ellison’s Twitter feed, and it is engaging to say the least. Judging from the short trailer, Joaquin Phoenix seems to play a Navy man who has some history of violence and malfeasance, judging from the conversation he’s having with some kind of military doctor or therapist. Rumor has it that the film is set in the 1950s, which seems to be accurate from the clips shown. The other big stars of the film, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams, do not appear in the released footage, but I hope to see them soon as the release date nears.

Production on The Master was highly secretive. I’m sure this was due to a number of reasons, but there’s one that intrigues me (and everyone else) most– the plot of the film supposedly focuses on a founder of a new religion (Hoffman) who seeks new followers in his faith. Why is this a secret? Well, the religion and the man portrayed in The Master are purportedly modeled after Scientology and its founder, L. Ron Hubbard. In case you haven’t heard, Scientologists don’t take too kindly to prying eyes, even ones that don’t directly reference their organization, such as the case with this film (but they also don’t like  South Park or Time magazine).

So, if you’re a fan of PTA, I think you’ll understand why this new film is particularly exciting. Though not a biography of L. Ron Hubbard per se, The Master might offer some insight into the notoriously hush hush and lawsuit-happy Church of Scientology (just typing that out makes me feel like they’re watching me). It’s hard to say just what the plot of the film will be like. When I first heard There Will Be Blood would revolve around an oil tycoon, I predicted a far different story than the one that ended up on screen.

Lucky for all of us, Paul Thomas Anderson knows what he’s doing.
