Harvey Weinstein Sure Does Care!

July 27, 2012 1 comment

Opportunistic vulture, media whore, and Mr. Socially Conscious Harvey Weinstein has dipped his unwanted toe into the news of the Aurora shooting tragedy. Big surprise.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, ‘ol Harv appears to suddenly possess a deep and genuine concern about the state of violence in American film. The executive producer behind bloodbaths such as RamboGangs of New York, Sin City, the Kill Bill films, and the upcoming Django Unchained sees a real problem with violence in movies (read that list again and bask in the irony). In the HuffPo interview, he apparently acknowledges that films may influence shooters like James Holmes and that he hopes his colleagues in Hollywood will talk about their influence on the public. “I think, as filmmakers, we should sit down – the Marty Scorseses, the Quentin Tarantinos, and hopefully all of us who deal in violence in movies – and discuss our role in that,” Weinstein said.

Way to make it about you, Harvey. There may be a sliver of nobility hidden in what you’re talking about, but what exactly do you plan to discuss? Will you discuss Read more…

Update on the “Gangster Squad”/Aurora Shooting Controversy

I previously wrote a piece about the possible edits/changes to the upcoming Sean Penn film Gangster Squad. Since that post there has been a small update on the status of the film and its controversial theater shooting scene (which can be seen in the trailer below… until the studio pulls it down). The Hollywood Reporter is saying that a possible January 2013 release date for the film is now in mind in order to write and shoot new footage. The picture was previously set to release on September 7th, which would put the movie in a position to make an awards season push. Warner Bros. has not verified this information yet, but if the film is moved into the beginning of next year in order to accommodate script changes and Read more…

The Controversy Over “Gangster Squad” (WARNING: Clip Below Contains Disturbing Content… But Will the Film?)

(UPDATE July 24th– the original trailer I posted for Gangster Squad on YouTube has been removed, so I’ve replaced it with another source, but there’s no saying how long it will be available)

The horrendous shooting during the screening for The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora has predictably spawned a great deal of debate, frequently mixed with outrage and finger-pointing. Issues like gun control, the justice system, and the media’s role after such tragedies have all sprung to the forefront. Another story involving a seemingly unrelated film called Gangster Squad has also been roped into the dialogue. The Warner Bros. film directed by Ruben Fleischer (helmer of Zombieland and the dreadful 30 Minutes or Less) stars Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and many other impressive actors in a period piece about L.A. mobster Mickey Cohen. The trailer above features a scene in which men with Tommy guns shoot up a movie theater. The same trailer was supposed to play in front of all screenings of The Dark Knight Rises. Understandably, Warner Bros. did their Read more…
